Sharp Shooters Pole Dancing School News Flash

September 7, 2011

Hi everyone here is your weekly newsletter to keep you informed with everything that is going on with Sharp Shooters Pole Dancing School.

This weekend I went with 2 friends, Helen and Dawn to the UK Pole Artistes Championships in Bolton.  It was held at the Albert Hall, Bolton which was a really cool venue and had a great turn out also.  The competition was organised by Jess Leanne Norris, owner of JLN Pole Fitness.

There were 4 categories, Intermediate, Advanced, Instructor and Professional, the standard was very high, there was also a lady in her fifties competing.

Intermediate

1st - Sian Roger Jones, Bolton - JLN Pole Fitness
2nd - Julie Dumont, Cardiff, Sminxie's School of Dance  - She was actually my favourite for this category – she came on as a cowgirl and had  lots of personality, good all round routine and fantastic crowd interaction
3rd - Sarah Hill, Macclesfield, Pole Groove

Advanced

1st - Kimberley Fraser, Aberdeen, former student Pole Pursuits
2nd - Julie-Ann Ashworth, Bolton, JLN Pole Fitness
3rd - Cindya Angel, Manchester, Bodybarre

Instructor

1st - Zara Berry, Essex, Pole Dolls – I loved this routine and totally thought she deserved to win
2nd - Leana Darbyshire, Great Harwood, Dance Fitness Academy she did a brilliant routine to the Phantom of the Opera.
3rd - Remi Tomlinson, Bolton, JLN Pole Fitness

Professional

1st – Penny Howarth, Bodybarre, Manchester
2nd - Lianne Pendergast, Cheadle Hulme, Bodybarre
3rd - Genevieve Moody, Staffordshire, The Flying School

The one surprise for me though was that Heidi Hildersley didn’t get placed, I really enjoyed her routine – here is a video of her routine.

Jess Leanne Norris is amazing, considering she is only 18 and at this standard already – here she is closing the
show

I was recently approached to do an interview for a Pole Dancing blog by a lovely lady from America called Sara (Xtreme Pole Fitness), so I have returned the favour and interviewed her.

Sara built her website about pole dancing to be a resource of pole dancing information, how-to's, quality DVDs, clothing, poles and products as well as how to get started, what to do about bruises, and any other questions people may have!

SS: Where were you born and where do you live now?
I was born in Central California and am getting ready to move to the Central California Coast!

SS: When did you start learning to Pole Dance?
I started my pole journey at the age of 30 (almost 5 years ago!) at Stripper 101 in Las Vegas. I had actually started poling in my mind with Sheila Kelley's book "Stripping for the Everyday Woman". I was hooked at the class in Vegas! I then went home and started a program at a studio an hour away from my home.

SS: What made you try Pole Dancing?
I wanted to try and find something to strengthen my upper body like climbing since I had so many back and hip problems. My massage therapist told me to find something to hang from to ease my hip pain. I thought of hanging a climbing rope in my front yard and using that. I didn't think of a pole.

I was in Border's Bookstore one day with a girlfriend and saw the S Factor
book on a display table, picked it up and was totally intrigued with the
idea of climbing and having fun on a dance pole!

SS: How often do you train?
I usually train once a week in my kitchen. I have not gone to a class for a long time. I have a pretty good DVD collection and Studio Veena is awesome when I need help with a move.

SS: Which move has taken you the longest to learn?
I still have advanced moves to learn...it took me a while to learn to do the extended butterfly to where it looked pretty

SS: What is your favourite move?
The Scorpio/Gemini...it is beautiful!

SS: Have you ever competed and if you have how did you find the experience?
I have never competed and don't plan on it...I would attend a competition though!

SS: Do you perform regularly?
No, only for my hubby if he's been a good boy :)

SS: When did you start your Pole Dancing business?
I started my pole website about a year and a half ago...it is fun meeting other dancers and businesses through interview and I learn so much through research. I enjoy being a source of information for others.

SS: What is your greatest achievement so far?
In life? Being a mother and being able to work from home and home school my two girls, 6 and 12 years old. My greatest achievement in pole dance has probably been to be able to help others find resources and information in this new arena of fitness and dance with my website www.learn-pole-dancing.com

SS: What do you say when people try and say that Pole Dancing is all about stripping?
I have to laugh and usually when people who know me find out that I pole dance they usually want an explanation...but I find that it is becoming more and more accepted as a fun and exciting form of fitness for women. It may take a while for people to accept it as a form of fitness for men.

SS: What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of giving it a go?
I totally encourage anyone who is even remotely interested..I warn them that they may immediately become addicted to the pole.
